PREEvision

What is PREEvision?

PREEvision is Vector Informatik’s integrated development environment for Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE). The tool enables end-to-end, model-based development of complex systems – from requirements capture through functional and logical architectures to physical implementation.

Thousands of engineers worldwide use PREEvision daily for E/E system development. Over 300 employees at Vector work on its continued development and implementation services.

RFLP Methodology

PREEvision fully supports the RFLP approach in a single, integrated environment:

  • Requirements – Capturing stakeholder needs and system constraints
  • Functional – Describing system functions, independent of technical implementation
  • Logical – Representing the abstract system architecture and interactions between components
  • Physical – Detailing the concrete implementation including hardware, software, and integration

By mapping all abstraction levels in one tool, data silos are eliminated and consistent, traceable development workflows are ensured.

Core Features

  • E/E Architecture Design – Design and documentation of E/E architectures in a unified environment, from initial concept to finished wiring harness
  • Network Topology & Communication Design – Modeling of network topologies and communication relationships
  • Wiring Harness Design – Automatic creation of wiring harness diagrams with clear representation of all connections
  • AUTOSAR Support – Design of compliant architectures for Classic and Adaptive Platform
  • ISO 26262 – Support for functional safety standard compliance
  • Zonal Architectures – Definition of zones in vehicle geometry and placement of ECUs and high-performance computers
  • SysML Integration – Behavioral modeling using SysML-based sequence diagrams
  • Consistency Checks – Automatic routers and consistency checks to accelerate development

History

PREEvision originated in 2003 as an industry-sponsored research project between the FZI Research Center for Information Technology and Daimler AG. The goal was to master the increasing complexity of electrical and electronic systems in vehicles. Researchers at FZI and the University of Karlsruhe developed a prototype for model-based E/E system development.

In 2005, aquintos GmbH was founded to commercialize PREEvision. The first production version launched in 2007 and won the Embedded Award in the Software Tools category. The innovative, centralized approach to E/E architecture design quickly gained traction with German and international automotive manufacturers and suppliers.

Vector Informatik acquired an initial stake in aquintos in 2009 and completed the full acquisition in 2010. Since then, Vector has evolved PREEvision from a pure architecture tool into a comprehensive enterprise solution.
